my dad wrote ford's obituary

seriously.

some of you may know that my dad spent the last several years writing a biography on melvin laird, who served as secretary of defense for pres. nixon. he was largely responsible for the troop withdrawal from vietnam, among other things.

a few weeks ago, the wall street journal asked my father to to write an obituary on pres. ford to be run under the byline of his long-time friend and fellow congressman, mel laird. the article ran today.

not long after he wrote that obituary, mel asked president ford (in the hospital) if he would write a foreword for dad's book on Mel. though he had constantly refused to write forewords to any books (too many requests), he agreed and the former president asked mel "if dale could write it for me." so, yes, he wrote the foreword for his own book under the late pres. ford's byline about laird -- and that, only a short while after he had written an obituary on ford by laird!

since i don't have a wsj subscription, i will post the obit when i get it from dad.

Tara-- That is the coolest thing ever! I had no idea you were so connected. Talk about keeping it real. I can't wait to read it.
