self-gifting

august 2012
it's sunday. i'm feeling a bit run down and like i don't really want to get out of bed.  disneyland took it's toll on my body (my knee) last night, so i'm cruisin' the web trying to entertain myself.

oh look, new items on my nathan fillion google alert feed.

yeah, yeah, already knew he'd be at calgary comic con. checked the dates. couldn't go. wait. what's this?  philadelphia comic con?  and there is a 'nathan fillion vip package'?  a guaranteed photo op?
VIP’s get:
• Philadelphia Comic Con 4-Day Weekend Ticket
• Exclusive Nathan Fillion VIP Badge
• Exclusive Nathan Fillion Lithograph
• (1) Nathan Fillion Photo with Signature Ticket - You can have him sign this photo OR another item on-site.
• (1) Photo Op with Nathan Fillion
• VIP’s get onto the show floor 30 Minutes before regular attendees each day of the show!

package purchased. hotel reserved. flight secured. promise made (to myself) that after i finally meet the guy, i will stop trying so desperately to meet the guy.  i won't even follow his twitter feed during san diego comic con to see if i can 'run into' him somewhere.  okay, well, maybe we won't go that far...

sast presents: conversations

the background: most of you know that, among other things, my friend and co-worker vicki and i share an interest in horses, and she has friends that work at the nearby race tracks.  recently she stopped by for lunch and we were talking about when we could find some time to go watch the races.

vicki: tim asked when we were coming to the track.  he said we could come early and ride.
me: ride what?
vicki: ride the horses. get them warmed up.  it's $15/hour.
me: $15/hour? that's cheap!
vicki: no, they pay YOU $15/hour
me: they pay me???
vicki: yes, for exercise riding.
me: they PAY. ME??

needless to say, when my knee is strong enough to get back on a horse, i will be taking full advantage of this!  exercise riding a racehorse? heaven!

**********

the background: every year my company hosts a consumer event in the long beach area and we rely on other employees to volunteer for the event.  i received this email today from one of the would-be volunteers, and it made me laugh heartily!

Good morning Tara,

I still have in my mind last year's event, when you passed by me, going fast on a golf kart. I saw you driving the golf kart with one hand, while the other held your walkie talkie, and you were giving instructions to someone, one foot on the pedal, pushed to the floor, and your splinted leg sticking out of the kart, a bunch of employees in the back with scary smiles, holding themselves tight.  I understood in that moment what true multi-tasking meant!

Please sign me up again this year.

ha ha ha ha! sounds about right!

sast presents: wednesday?

last weekend i worked another pride event.

this one was in long beach, and truth be told, it was kind of a rough weekend. my brakes started grinding on the way to the event saturday morning, which meant i couldn't take care of them for a full two days. and if that was enough bad news, my gps was stolen from my car. awesome.

i will say that i really really have come to adore my co-worker melissa, and working with her always makes giving up a weekend more bearable.

**********************************
while at pride sunday night, we got a pretty good earthquake. a 4.7 i believe. it was a very surreal thing to be outside and to watch the earth kind of do the wave in front of me. it makes me a little nervous that there have been so many earthquakes since my arrival here, but my native californians assure me that some years are that way, others are not. i am certainly hoping we're not due for the 'big one' any time in the near future!

**********************************
i am so excited for memorial day weekend. a weekend i'm actually NOT working. and i get to focus on doing a little as humanly as possible.

**********************************

cordy is doing amazingly well. she's pretty much the cutest dog ever. it's been soooo fun to watch her personality evolve as she settles in and as she interacts with the other two canine roommates. lots of tail wagging and tonight, yes, tonight, there was dancing.

**********************************

i finally took some pics of the house!

**********************************

every short attention span theater needs a little irony. remember my friend jesse? the one i completely randomly ran into on a plane that one time? well, it turns out that that was not the last of our strange meetings. though he was already planning on helping me with the 'do nothing' holiday weekend, it also turns out that the following weekend we'll both be in seattle. i'll be there for work, and he'll be there killing some time before heading out on a cruise with his fam. the irony is that i only learned late last week that i would be needed, so it's not a trip i was originally planning on. but one which is shaping up to be a really good time!

***********************************
speaking of seattle. i am super excited to see my old frined leah. not that she's old (we're the same age), but we literally grew up together. two doors down, all through junior high and high school. she ended up joining the church, temple marriage, whole shabang. it's probably been 7 or 8 years since i've seen her, and she lives outside of seattle with her hubby and kids. it is going to be so fantastic to reconnect!

**********************************
i saw star trek a couple of weeks ago, though i haven't posted since. seriously, how awesome was that?! i loved every minute of it.

this episode of sast is now concluded.

sast presents: wednesday night/thursday morning

1. i've become obsessed with the abc family show 'greek'. this is in large part due to the fact that one of my new roommates is responsible for the lack of cable and internet in the house since monday morning. i am currently stealing wireless from 'sharing is caring' and in this case sharing is definitely caring. can't help all the season premieres i'm missing though. ask me how i feel about that.

2. RAE - if you're attending this (as i suspect you are), can you port an extra copy of stardust (pb is fine) on the off chance you are actually able to get close enough to gaiman to get the john hancock?

3. To cap off this special month, don't miss the 7th Annual World’s Largest Ice Cream Social at participating Cold Stone Creamery locations nationwide, a special night to join together and share the simple pleasures of life with a FREE ice cream and family fun. On September 25th from 5:00 - 8:00PM, guests will be treated to a 3 oz. serving of Jack or Emily's Creation. All donations will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

you're welcome.

sast presents: tuesday

dad's book is now available for pre-order on amazon.com. go order it.

*****

i realized today that i buy clothes i love, then never wear them because i am saving them for just the 'right' function. not that i've bought anything recently. but i wore a shirt today i don't like all that much because i didn't want to waste the shirt i love on work, where there is no one to impress. the 'shirt i love' was purchased about two and a half months ago.

*****

as mentioned previously, my neck pain last week drove me to a chiropractor--a profession i am generally skeptical of. a slew of tests and x-rays were done (though i still don't have the results), and i learned that my body has issues. but, after three visits/adjustments at $60 a pop, my neck wasn't feeling any better. granted, the sharp writhing pain from turning my neck went away, but it was replaced with an achey stiffness that even further limited my range of motion.

after returning to work on friday and telling a co-worker about the visit, another co-worker overheard and came to ask the name of my doctor. i told her, and her response was "i had this sick feeling you were going to say that. i used to go to him and had an awful experience." mostly that awful experience seemed to be money related, but that was enough to send me running. as i mentioned, i'm sort of skeptical of the chiro doctors anyway. everyone i've ever known who used them frequented their offices so much i'd consider it a sort of addiction. at the same time. my neck still hurt.

i did a little more digging and one of my mormon colleagues, who also lives in huntington gave me the name of and extremely high praise for a doctor here in hb. his first comment was that he was really honest, so i was willing to try it.

i had my first appointment yesterday, and already the difference is significant. the other appointments weren't 'bad.' they weren't making it worse. they just weren't making it better. at all.

the previous doctor adjusted only my neck. 'dr. john' adjusted my upper and lower back, my hip, AND my neck. and of course his wife was there with their totally cute and lovable dog. and now i feel better:)

not 100%, but much much better.

*****

i honestly think zicam nasal swabs are the best cold-stoppers ever.

*****

once again, my astrologyzone.com horoscope is pretty dead on. i seriously love that site. the most appropriate for the month of march seems to be....

You do still have Saturn on your Sun, which means you are handling more responsibility than ever. You may have taken on a new position or started a new business, moved cross-country, got married, had your first baby, or purchased your first house. Something about what you are doing is so new that there will be lots to learn. Every day is new - and exhausting.

*****
speaking of sites i love, i have a new addiction.

canadians get a bad rap. this is brilliant.

thus concludes another monumental episode of short attention span theater.
thank you for your attention.

sast (expanded version) presents: friday

i’m not sure why friday calls for randomness, but that is the emerging pattern.

*****

i find it fascinating that different places subscribe to different beauty trends. for example, when i lived in utah, the trend was to airbrush the white tip on a french manicure. you couldn’t get it painted if you tried. and when i visited portland, i could not for the life of me find what i refer to as an ‘asian nail place’…you know, the nail salons that exist in every strip mall in the state of virginia and are always run by asians.

well, california is no different. earlier this week, i left a note on the message board at the house asking if anyone had a good eyebrow waxer. one of the roommates wrote back saying she has her eyebrows ‘threaded’, and left the business card for a salon. i have seen many places with signs proclaiming their ‘threading’ services, but i had no idea what that meant.

i was up for an adventure however, and my other roommate wanted to join me. we were awed at what we learned, and the outcome it yielded.

apparently threading is an ancient asian technique, although most of the salons that do it are middle eastern, and i’m told the indians have been using it for a long time to take care of those nasty unibrows. basically, the ‘technician’ takes some string, twists it this way, pulls it that, and voila, perfectly arched eyebrows. sounds very technical doesn’t it?! :) it is slightly more painful than waxing, but no more painful than plucking, and the results are far better. for one, no burn marks (which, when you have sensitive skin is almost a certainty) and supposedly, it lasts longer. not to mention that it put me out a whopping 6 bucks.

i won’t post the video here, but if you ladies are interested (and it’s pretty interesting), i found this clip on youtube.

*****

last night i headed to lezlie’s (previously referred to as lw) with my roommate ariane (pronounciation=arrian…as in ‘nation’)

me and my roomie (ariane was also my 'threading' buddy)

for a girls only valentine’s day party. co-hosts were holly (hb) and charity (ck), and these three are quite a team. there were plenty of delicious treats (i made a pretty kick-butt salad), but the highlight was the stripper. yes. i said stripper. only, it’s a bunch of mormon girls, and the 'stripper' is apparently quite the funny man. there were plenty of ones, however. and the fact that they had madonna’s face and hearts on them was on par for the function. (don't worry family and other jaw droppers, it was a completely innocent and entertaining joke)

valentine's day fun

*****

i finally finally found the nightstand i want for my room.

*****

the high in utah for the weekend is supposed to be 43. the high in socal, 73. why did i think this trip was such a good idea?

*****

tonight i head north to hang out with brandon and michelle. brandon is doing well, and is nearly finished with his chemotherapy. they'll start running tests in two weeks to check the results.

it's been far too long since i've seen he and michelle and i'm excited to resume our 'angel' marathon! only half of that has to do with my obsession of david boreanaz...

*****

have a wonderful holiday weekend!

sast presents: friday

me and cal ripken

i'm mostly settled in to the new place, though we (me and the fam) were all too sick to move the bed last weekend, so it's mattress city for the moment.

the conference team (or a good chunk of them anyway)

my commute to work is short. my commute to church, shorter. my commute to the beach, even shorter.

hard at work

on a total whim, and as a result of having an extra 'holiday' and an airline ticket that must be used, i'm going to utah next weekend. for no good reason other than the travel time is decent, and i know people:)

shocking evidence that it is actually possible to take a decent photo without holding
the camera a foot above one's head to eliminate the double-chin factor

it's a very small mormon world. between the co-workers, the roommates, and the random others, the connections never end.

that cute lw (see above) is co-hosting a valentine's day party with ck and hb.

they totally rocked the invite (see below)

here ends our presentation of short attention span theater. in the upcoming days, i hope for more installments (with house photos!)

short attention span theater

signature pieces

i am a firm believer in signature pieces. i believe that every girl should have one or two pieces in her jewelry collection that she is known for. classic, versatile, yet unique and fun. several months ago, i found a piece that i fell in love with, and have worn it virtually every day since then. you will see it in the large majority of pictures i'm in during that time period. it looks like this:

now don't get me wrong, i still love this piece. but, something came across my bloglines yesterday that has me longing for a change. if you have seen casino royale (arguably the greatest bond movie of all time), you will know that this year's bond girl (arguably the worst bond girl of all time) had her own signature piece.

i remember thinking, i LOVE that necklace, but it's in gold, not silver (and i just don't DO gold). then, lo and behold, i was made aware of this, and fell a little in love. the only problem of course, is that my budget is too tight too allow for this little splurge for the foreseeable future. with paris, and now having to get serious about saving money to move, it will have to remain a little dream for an indefinite period of time. i am posting it here so you all can see it and imagine how great it would look on me, and then we can all just keep pretending it is my new signature piece..k?

*****
oral surgery, part 721

many of you will remember that last year, i underwent some fairly major dental procedures. though i have a healthy mouth and incredible smile (no snickers please), i had (through no fault of my own) two seriously problematic teeth. one of them was repaired with a root canal and crown, but the other was beyond hope and had to be extracted. that meant that i would have to have an implant. implants are expensive. so i waited. i put a ton of money in my flexible spending account this year, and now that i will most likely be leaving, i needed to get on the stick.

so, tomorrow, the first part of the surgery will take place. they will give me a local anesthetic and laughing gas, and then they will screw a very scary looking corkscrew-like screw made of titanium in my gum. once completed, it will have to sit for four months while the gum adheres to the screw, at which point they will put on a crown and voila!

as someone who thinks she can feel what she can hear and see, even if it is not remotely possible, to say that i am freaked out would be an understatement. last year's procedures were painful, and left me more than once a bit (or more than a bit) swollen, and this is the mommy of all those procedures. the only upsides? laughing gas and codeine. god bless the pain killers.

*****
top 10 paris favorites
(in chronological order)

1. the carte orange-a week long unlimited metro pass that makes it really easy to hop on and hop off where needed. for this special pass, passport photos are affixed to a very official looking card, which, as it turns out, is only necessary if you ride the bus.

2. the arc de triomphe. though we were in many places that provided spectacular views of the city, this was a favorite because the platform at the top is completely open. as such, you have 360 degree access to the bird's eye view. hitting this spot on a beautiful sunny day definitely enhanced it's coolness.

3. random parks in random places. this one happens to be off the champs elysees, but it was one of many. i was seriously impressed by how much the french love their parks and gardens. they are clean, well manicured, quiet, and have many places to put up your feet for a spell.

4. les catacombes. the catacombes were one of three things on my 'must do' list for this trip, and they did not disappoint. the underground tunnels filled with human remains stacked in careful and ornate designs were creepily eerie, and well worth the 7 euro entry fee. i must admit that i have a certain fascination with the morbid, and this was one of two stops (the other being pere lachaise cemetary) catering to that odd interest.

5. what the french have that we don't have. in this case, three of my favorites. on the left, bandages that come in one long roll which can be cut to size and is perfect for breaking in those new shoes. in the middle, a device that boils quickly, and made tea time a lot simpler. and, on the right, diet coke with orange. though it sounds strange, it was delicious. here's hoping it makes it's way to the states!

6. the train ride to versailles. in and of itself, this would not have made the list, but during our journey, deb attempted to take a self-portrait of us. you can see the result below. having sympathy, the couple in the quad next to ours offered to take our photo. that offer sparked a conversation that would last the remainder of the trip. the couple was an older one from argentina. celebrating their 30th anniversary, they had been to london, rome, paris, and were on to new york following that. our conversation was both delightful and entertaining.

delightful in that they were a darling couple, and gave deb and i both cause to hope that we can find husbands who will want to travel with us 30 years into marriage. and entertaining in that one of their first questions to us was if we were single. when we responded affirmatively, out come the wallet, and the pictures of their two sons, 25 and 28, who they then proceeded to try and set us up with. truth be told, they were both cute, and deb and i may have to take up their offer to host us in argentina at some time;) i regret that i don't have a photo of the couple--probably the only regret of the trip. but i do have an email address and plan to stay in touch.

7. versailles itself. my expectations of versailles were low. my expectations of anything with high tourist traffic are low. versailles exceeded all my expectations by leaps and bounds. the chateau is a large house and i'm not really a house girl, but the gardens were the most incredible thing i've ever seen. wandering around in them made me absolutely giddy.

8. pere lachaise. the second 'morbid' stop on the trip was another favorite. i was fascinated at the sheer size and layout of the cemetery, as well as the graves themselves. nary a traditional us type grave to be found, each was dramatic and ornate, or barring that, at least large. though we pit-stopped at jim morrison's grave, the highlight was that of abelard and heloise, the oldest residents of the cemetery. we knew virtually nothing about these two, but that they had been involved in a tragic love story. later, we consulted wiki to learn more. sadly, the monument was under renovation and did not allow for any good shots.

9. new french boyfriends. something i love about the french is their ability to express appreciation for beauty. i don't know why in our culture it is just creepy when you walk by a guy and he tells you you're beautiful, but it is. yet in france, and a few other places, it's culturally integrated and thereby not creepy. this happened to us often throughout the trip, but the most notable encounter was when deb was accosted at notre dame. mirdi was there selling keychains, and instantly took a liking to deb--sneaking up to stand beside her in a photo i was taking.

when he asked her if she was single and she said yes, i knew we were in trouble. i knew she was thinking she would have some fun, and then leave, but i also knew that i was going to have to be the one to get rid of the guy. my suspicions were confirmed when later--much later--she looked at me and said 'you're going to have to ditch this guy. i don't know how.' i find it ironic that this street savvy new yorker couldn't take care of it herself, but alas, that's how the chips ultimately fell. beforehand however, deb's new french boyfriend, who knew 'the guy' at notre dame, ensured that we did not have to wait in line, nor pay to ascend to the top. he also volunteered to take a lot of photos, so there are many of deb and i not taken at an arm's (or quikpod's) length.

at the completion of our notre dame excursion, mirdi took us to meet his 'boat guy' friend who offered to take us on one of the seine cruises. asen instantly declared me his future wife, and truth be told, if the circumstances had been different, i might have played with it a little more. but they were what they were, and eventually i got rid of them both. ultimately, the highlight of this experience was being able to tease deb that my new french boyfriend was way cuter than her new french boyfriend!

10. the food, of course! i had been dreaming of croques and crepes and was not disappointed. in fact, at one point deb made the appropriate comment 'i never thought i could be sick of bread and cheese, but i need a break.' the unexpected surprises though came in the forms of gelato and hot chocolate.

during our first day, wandering around our neighborhood, we stumbled upon a gelato place. never one to pass up such a thing we stopped, and realized we had come upon a treasure. it was delicious and there was such a variety of flavors, that we stopped two more times on the trip. not only tasty, but pretty as well--the gelatiers? took great pride in their work, crafting each cone into a lovely flower.

the other unexpected surprise was hot chocolate. at well known les deux magots cafe, the hot chocolate is made from melting a chocolate bar into mile. you can only imagine how divine this must be, and even then, you would fall short. this 'meal' at les deux magots cost us 32 euros, and worth every penny.

*****
season finale time

it's that time of year again, when good tv goes on hiatus. this year also marks the final farewells of some of the faves, so here are my brief thoughts and comments:

1. gilmore girls.
frankly, i've been an avid watcher since the beginning, and this series has seen it's highs and lows. lately though, it's been mostly lows, with just a few glimpses of it's former glory. it was time for this one to end.

2. veronica mars.
like gilmore girls, me, avid watcher, day 1. yet, unlike gg, definitely not time for this to end, and sadly, my vote doesn't count. in my book, this is one of the most witty, clever, and sardonically written shows out there, and i'm a little heartbroken at it's cancellation. especially with the likes of shows like 'pussycat dolls' being renewed on the network. i'll admit to watching my fair share of reality tv, but things are getting out of hand now. vm will be sorely missed, and i may be off the cw for good.

3. grey's anatomy.
i'll admit. i have loved and defended this show, but i think now, i have to be done. it's a shell of it's former self, and the only redeeming moment of this finale ep was sandra oh's final scene, which was powerful to say the least.

4. heroes.
this is one heck of a show. the season finale for the most part was fabulous, barring the last few minutes, which i felt were a complete let down. that's just not how you end a finale. i need the continuity editors to be at the top of their game, and i didn't feel like they were. if someone can explain to me why peter couldn't just fly himself out of the danger zone, rather than nathan having to do it, or why everyone thinks peter will recover from being blown into a million tiny pieces, when he couldn't recover from a piece of glass being stuck in his head, i would be ever so grateful. p.s. i know it's kind of sick, but sylar is dang hot, and this is one bad guy i really don't want to see killed off.

5. lost.
i have had such a love hate relationship with lost. this show is an emotional roller coaster for me, and this was how a finale should be done. we get some answers, we got some new questions, and my heart was seriously racing. there are a couple of things i just don't get, ie why charlie couldn't have shut the door from the OUTSIDE, thereby saving himself from drowning. i guess some might argue that he had just resigned himself to his fate, and he felt like it was the only way to guarantee the fruition of desmond's visions thereby saving the rest of the losties. i might even buy it, but i would have liked it if that scene was structured in such a way as too remove that question. ultimately what have we learned from this finale? sayid is always right. period. i can't believe i have to wait until february of '08 to see what happens next, but if those eps are anything like the last several, it will be well worth it.

alright folks, i've given you plenty to comment on. free for all, anyone?

short attention span theater presents: friday

life is full of little contradictions. for instance, i don't like football, but i like football movies.

in an unplanned maneuver, two of my recent netflixes have been football movies. the first was 'invincible.' set in the 70s, mark wahlberg plays a local boy who walks on to the philadelphia eagles.

the second was 'gridiron gang'. set in modern day, dwayne 'the rock' johnson plays a correctional officer at a juvenile detention facility, who decides to turn his little criminals into football players.

both are based on true stories, which is always a good start for me, and both leads are fairly delicious. wahlberg, even with his 70's shag cut is still fine. and despite the furrowed brow, i've been a little in love with the rock since i saw him making valentine's cookies on martha stewart many years ago. the guy is funny.

both movies are tales of the underdog, and who doesn't love an underdog? my preference however, was gridiron gang. while invincible captured the struggle of one man to overcome odds, gridiron gang, instead told a tale of someone who affected change within his circle of influence, so that many could overcome odds. i am almost always moved by stories like this, and their lesson that not only is change possible, but one person can have power to orchestrate it in a meaningful way.

i enjoyed both flicks, and both surpassed expectations, but if i had to recommend one, it would definitely be gridiron gang.

***

last week word came down that they were moving our procurement department from the building next door into this one, which means my having to move to accommodate. the office of any event planner is akin to a black hole of miscellaneous items; leftover awards, flip charts, boxes of name badges, gift bags, more catalogs than one person should have, files on top of files, random gifts from venues like pillows and robes and place card holders. it is organized chaos at best, and disaster at worst, depending on the event season. so the prospect of moving has not been a pleasant one. especially since i am only moving four doors down. yes, it is a bigger office, but if you ask me, it's a lot of trouble for a lot of people for only four doors.

earlier this week i was told by our facilities department (the department that has a crush on me) that i could leave everything on my bookcase and in my filing cabinet. this was sweet relief, and as i watched my hall-mates pack up their cabinets and bookcases, it would seem they made an exception in my case.

i can't officially move until late next week when my new desk arrives, but my new office was vacant as of yesterday. while the guys were moving other folks on the hall, they asked if i needed anything. 'well, whenever you can move my white board and cork board, that would be great.' it was immediately taken care of, which is especially humorous since colleagues of mine have waited upwards of two months to have that 'service' performed. there are most definitely perks to being a 'favorite.'

below is a pic of the madness, and yes, the little boy (in the striped shirt) in the pic is the 'new guy.' he apparently continues to ask other folks about me, and doesn't seem to be put off at having been told 'she only dates mormons.' he did finally speak to me yesterday. his profound first words were 'tara, are you moving today?' what can i say? he's 21.

***

i often forget how much taller i am than most of my girlfriends (most of my guy friends too!), until i see pictures of us standing. it's why i make deb stand on ledges and steps above me.

***

i don't have anything to do this weekend. on one hand that is a glorious thing, since i don't have to teach. on the other, i don't have anything to do this weekend. maybe i'll start packing. giving myself a week is usually a good idea. and if i start packing, i guess i should do laundry. phew. now i have something to do this weekend.
