thank you, matt hampsey

my dad tipped me off a few months ago that you could send emails to national park service sites requesting they send cancellation stamps. since then, i've been randomly contacting some of the sites i've visited, and for whatever reason, was not able to get stamps for.

today i got an envelope with the following items enclosed:

usually i get the stamp, but this time i got the stamp, the site guide, and a postcard from matt hampsey, a helpful national park service employee. i <3 the nps and their helpful employees!

This is so cool! If I ever won the lottery I would so travel to and donate part of my winning to this group.

I love it! You need to explain what this is all about though. I'm loving the sound of it.

i know, so cool! i so want to go back to new orleans, find matt hampsey, and thank him in person. those little touches are huge!

laura - the national park system has a program where you can purchase a 'passport' and collect stamps (think of customs stamps) at any and every site in the national park system. i listed some of the ones i've gotten this year in my last post, but there are a lot more to be had. pretty much any national park, historical park, historic site, or monument has a stamp and sometimes more than one!

It started as something my dad and I did, since we seemed to drive cross-country a lot, but it's become a great tool for me to see and learn new things. whenever i'm on the road for work, i see if there are any i might be able to get to, and there have been a few times i have been more than pleasantly surprised by places i would have never visited, except for my insane need to fill the passport with stamps!
